THE LIST

Lists are funny things—especially when they are in the Bible. You see, we tend to think any list we read in Scripture is THE list. The final word on the subject. The ultimate authority. We think if something isn’t on the list, then it’s not important, not worth memorizing or studying.

Think about how we do that with the Ten Commandments, memorizing and quoting them as the final authority on Old Testament rules. We forget there’s a lot of other stuff in the Old Testament that gets more attention—things like community rules, correct worship, even how the priests were supposed to dress.

Well, we do the same thing with the passages where Paul talks about spiritual gifts. We read them like Paul was listing every possible gift. And when we read those verses like that, we add them up to make a neat little list we can quote or evaluate ourselves by. I’m not sure that’s what Paul ever intended.

But I do think it’s helpful to consider the specific gifts Paul does mention. So when you look at this list that includes gifts Paul wrote about in his letters to the churches in Rome, Corinth, and Ephesus, ask yourself if you see yourself in any of these. (Note that the gifts of prophecy and teaching are mentioned in more than one verse, but I’ve listed each only once.)
